The Wellbeing Garden.
We recognise that growth does not only happen within four walls. Our Sensory Garden and outdoor space has been thoughtfully designed as a secure space where any children and adults can feel safe, regulated and inspired.
The garden is fully enclosed, providing reassurance and security, while still offering freedom to explore with Thackley’s Buck Wood just a two minute walk away! Our large bi-fold doors connect the indoor Flow Room directly to the garden, allowing individuals to move seamlessly between spaces. This flexible transition supports emotional regulation as individuals can step outside for calm and sensory input, or return indoors.
A Safe and Regulating Environment
For many individuals with SEND or SEMH needs, outdoor spaces can feel overwhelming if they are unpredictable or unsafe. Our sensory garden has been carefully developed to remove those barriers or worries.
It includes:
- A large sensory shelter, kindly donated by The Mason’s Foundation, for shaded learning and group work
- Tactile planting areas with varied textures, scents and colours
- Secure boundaries to promote confidence and independence
- Comfortable seating areas for reflection, socialising and outdoor learning
- Open space for movement, regulation and therapeutic activities
The design encourages calm exploration, social interaction and sensory engagement, supporting both emotional wellbeing and physical development.
Learning Beyond the Classroom
The Sensory Garden is not only therapeutic, it can also be an active learning environment.
We deliver accredited programmes through ASDAN, with a particular focus on:
- Horticulture
- Environmental Awareness
- Personal and Social Development
- Life Skills Challenges
Through hands-on gardening, planting, maintaining and nurturing the space, individuals develop responsibility, teamwork, patience and practical skills. Watching something grow that they have planted themselves can be a powerful confidence-building experience too!
Horticulture sessions also support Preparation for Adulthood pathways by developing:
- Routine and responsibility
- Planning and organisation
- Physical coordination
- Communication and collaboration
- An understanding of sustainability and wellbeing
A Space to Thrive
True to the values of Sowing Seeds Wellbeing, the Sensory Garden is designed to nurture the whole person.
It is a place where individuals can:
- Regulate emotions through nature
- Build social confidence in small group settings
- Learn practical skills in a meaningful way
- Experience success outside traditional classroom expectations
- Feel safe while exploring independence
The seamless flow between the indoor environment and the secure outdoor space allows us to adapt sessions in real time, responding to sensory needs and emotional wellbeing.
Our Sensory Garden is more than an outdoor area — it is a living, breathing extension of our ethos: creating safe spaces where individuals can grow, feel connected, and flourish now and into the future.
We believe that wellbeing belongs to the whole family. Our Sensory Garden is a secure, therapeutic outdoor space designed not only for children and adults with SEND, but also for parents, carers and visitors to feel welcome, relaxed and included.
Fully enclosed and thoughtfully structured, the garden offers reassurance and safety while still providing freedom to explore. Large bi-fold doors connect directly from the Flow Room into the garden, allowing individuals to move fluidly between indoor and outdoor environments. This seamless transition supports emotional regulation and sensory balance offering choice, autonomy and comfort.
A Secure Space for Grow and to Regulate
For individuals with SEND or SEMH needs, safety is essential. Our garden is fully secure, giving families peace of mind that their dependent is safe while engaging in activities within the garden or accessing any of our indoor sensory rooms.
Key features include:
- A large sensory shelter for shaded learning and small group sessions
- Tactile planting areas with varied textures, scents and colours
- Secure boundaries to promote confidence and independence
- Comfortable seating areas for learning, reflection and socialising
- Open areas for movement and regulation
This carefully designed environment reduces anxiety while encouraging exploration, connection and confidence.
A Space for Families and Visitors Too
The Sensory Garden is intentionally inclusive. It is a welcoming space for:
- Parents and carers
- Visiting professionals
- Community partners
Families can enjoy the seating areas, fresh air and calm surroundings while knowing the person being cared for is safe, supported and engaged whether in the garden itself or within our indoor sensory spaces.
We understand that parents and carers also need moments to breathe, reflect and feel reassured. The garden provides that opportunity and a place to pause, enjoy the view and feel part of the journey.
Forest School & Visiting Animals
Our garden is also used by trusted external providers and our partners to deliver Forest School workshops for all ages, including our adult learners and members of the community. These sessions promote resilience, teamwork, problem-solving and confidence through nature-based learning experiences.
The space is large enough to support animal enrichment too. It provides a safe outdoor roaming area for our guinea pigs when supervised, or space for them to relax securely in their hutch. We also welcome larger visiting animals, including alpacas, where appropriate risk assessments and welfare considerations are in place. These visits create powerful therapeutic and educational experiences that many individuals may not otherwise have access to.
Accredited Learning in Nature
The garden is also an active learning environment where we deliver accredited programmes through ASDAN, particularly:
- Horticulture
- Environmental Awareness
- Personal and Social Development
- Life Skills Challenges
Through planting, maintaining and nurturing the garden, individuals develop responsibility, teamwork, resilience and pride. Horticulture sessions are especially powerful in supporting Preparation for Adulthood, fostering patience, routine and a sense of achievement.
